MKMOT (July 12, 2010)

Here's your open thread for July 12, 2012, the day you bought a muffin for breakfast and then had Frank Zappa's Muffin Man stuck in your head for the rest of the friggin' day.

Hey, remember yesterday when Sponsored by V8 said if you have a gif as your avatar I will summarily dismiss any replies to me regardless of content? Reading between the lines, I think he's saying that anyone that posts a gif that you can't readily ignore is really kind of an asshole. Good thing we don't have anyone like that around here, right? RIGHT?

Anyway, as others have said, quality commenting does seem to be on the uptick. Let's keep it going, both at DS and here.

Here's a song to get you fired up.

  1. Well today's going to be a fun day. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the gym my basketball league plays in just reopened (brand new floor!)...and rampant reports of ignored child rape are going to be all I read about. Shit.

  3. Love that the commentariat is back and kicking, love that DS is doing an excellent job with the Penn State/Freeh Report stuff.

Having our best and brightest drop puns and wordplay stuff in the comments of these serious, thoughtful and frankly somber posts is a little... Unseemly? Offputting? Something along those lines? Not bad, or wrong by any means, just more of a round peg/square hole situation.

I understand that I'm being sacrilegious to some degree, and I get that we're not the ones making the stupid "drop the soap, Jerry" comments or the holier-than-though moral grandstanding opinonbombs, I just think that that's not the best place for those exercises in comedic misadventure.

This may just be a matter of taste, and I'll eat my ketchup and hot pepper, and you can eat your bread and butter pickles and we'll cordially agree to disagree, but I do think there are more and less valuable times to go 100% zany jokefest*.

*Yes, I'm totally skipping past the whole "overwhelm the trolls/malcontents" angle. Noted.

    1. It's a fair criticism. I haven't seen much that crossed my line of good taste this morning. Look, all comedy is tragedy plus time, right? No one making jokes is making light of the abuse, but the way it was dealt with by supposedly responsible persons. But that's always a subjective thing, to each his own.

    2. Absolutely right on the issue of the lack of jokes where the punchline is "HAHA, Childrape!"

I'm certainly not trying to passive-aggressively point out any particular comment or commenter, and I'm not sure I've completely thought out this point to its logical end. My observation has less to do with taste or offensiveness than juvenilia and insipid puerility.

Essentially, reading these very impressive articles, and then reading some (metaphorically speaking) 15 line dialogue joke where the punch line has to do with Ethel Merman giving Joe Paterno a handjob (no matter how objectively funny it might be on its own) strikes a clang-y note to my ears, and I'm sure a lot of the audience that aren't DS insiders/commenting obsessives are like "WTF is this?"

    3. I don't think you're in any way wrong to feel off about the humor. Totally within your right. I do want to say thanks for airing that thought here rather than as a response to the comments themselves.

I actually feel considerably less horrible about the entire thing when I have a laugh about Raysism's typographical joke, RMJ=H mocking crowdsourcing/making a FreeH chemistry joke, or my own mental image of Paterno dumping his diaper on the ground in front of a janitor. For me, the darker a story gets the more welcome the humor is. But as was said above, it's the way in which that humor is delivered that's really important.

  4. Not Kenny Baloggins or Natorious B.A.L.O.G - Ok, it's me, sweatingmulletsJuly 12, 2012 at 1:33 PM

I wrote a little ditty about the PSU thing. I wasn't sure where to put it, so I'm putting it here.

    - Free Peder Report -

I chose PSU instead of catching a thief
Too bad they don't know that a peder is whack.

    1. I misspelled my own title, doh! It should be Freeh Peder Report. Oh well, you get the idea.

  5. So, yeah Kinja brought out a load of dickheads right off the bat, but in the past few days, with what looks like (maybe?) aggressive Faerie-ing and a bigtime influx of the old-time good commenters, the idiots are in retreat.

What has surprised me is that there have been a few good deadspin-style jokey comments dropped by what appear to be randos.

Like this: http://deadspin.com/5925598/?comment=50901426 and this: http://deadspin.com/5925615/?comment=50901777 and others that I can't be bothered to dig up this moment.

Is this validation of the reasons for Kinja? No, not really, but it is some grains of sugar in the sour sauce that it's been up till now.

  6. Hey guys, long time lurker first time caller. Most of you know me as " that unfunny guy who only posts on DUAN " or " That unfunny guy on twitter ", but thought I'd throw in a post on this sports deprived day about Kinja. Honestly when it started I couldn't stand it, and definitely thought it'd be the end of everything; and I was lurkin' around before the last redesign. It's grown on me though, I think generous +1's, and ignoring the trolls are really helping over there. I know when I started finally commenting, things like this blog, MBA, and +1's are the reason I tried to bring the funny (I know I have yet to do this, but I've redacted some awful ones) and didn't go on a tear with one ball Dykstra jokes. So way too long story short, I think keepin' on keepin' on with the sites and comments and it'll be back to normal except without stars, which I'll claim I got once everyone forgets I didn't.
