MKM Open Thread (Feb 27, 2012)

Oh sonofabitch, don't try to use blogger on an iPad or you end up losing your entire morning post just trying to add a shitty YouTube clip to appease your bitchy readership.

Anyway, welcome to your blah blah blah for February 27, 2012, blah blah blah.

At least the fuckup gives me a chance to include a link to my favorite comment in the last month..

  1. No video today? Man, this place is going downhill fast.

  2. Normally, I'd start a 20-reply thread about the awesome video IMG posted today, but in lieu of that, a serious question:

Does anyone else have trouble accessing the site? Most of the time it works fine; but regularly I'll reload and get a server error. Then I refresh about 10 more times and it works. It's not an issue with other sites, even .blogspot ones. Using Chrome on Mac OS because I'm in the 1%.

    1. I use Chrome, and never have any problems.

Although I wish the comments would load automatically.

  3. who are your favorite commenters? that's not the same thing as "the best". who's stuff do you like the most?

    1. I'm really not sure there is a difference between my "favorite" and my "the best." But, everytime I see Bevraj, Steve_U or EMS pop up, I read extra carefully (especially with EMS as he sometimes hits with very subtle stuff that my sometimes drunk and always rushing vantage point misses).

But, those are obvious, so I'll throw a less obvious one into the mix - I've always liked Cyrus-the-Virus's work. He has gotten some crap around here for not being out-and-out funny, but I normally find his comments interesting and while I get the frustration at the obscurity of some of his comments, I like them because I normally learn something. I started commenting at Deadspin because it was so rare to find someone overtly intellectual on a blog comment section - but Deadspin has an embarrassment of riches on that score (Cyrus, Azure Texan, Favre [fill in blank], BronzeHammer and others I am unintentionally neglecting).

    2. If I had to pick one, it would be David Hume. Dude is pretty much always funny, smart and weird. That's the trifecta.

      Delete
    3. Outside of the consensus top 5 or 10?

Hume, probably. Even when not Linning, Always Winning and I seem to be on the same wavelength. If the other commenters are nice scotch, Texan's like an ouzo, and I like my weird-ass ouzo. Among the newer folk, BBAM's hitting my sweet spot a lot of late, too. Rare Endangered Vuvuzuela, when he posts.

    4. @StF: Vuvuzela is a great choice. His best jokes are like funny Rubik's Cubes, really complex and challenging, but rewarding. He uses what I think of as the "negative space" of the joke really well.

This one's obvious, but I'm a huge fan of Mantis Toboggan, M.D. as well.

(Also, I couldn't imagine a top 10 that wouldn't include Hume and Tex, but you did say "consensus," so maybe I'm the weirdo.)

    5. Don't tell him I said this, cuz he'll probably show up at my house again with fruit smoothies and Bridesmaids, but lately SavetoFavorites has really been cracking me up. His jokes - non-traditional format/setup with offbeat/non-obvious punchlines - are right up my alley.

    6. Just an anonymous Deadspin commenter. Could be anyone. Except UweBollocks. Definitely not him.February 27, 2012 at 2:04 PM

I usually think Uwe does a great job out there. He's funny, and I feel like he has a gigantic cock. Just a feeling I get reading his posts. That and that he's good looking.

Analysis-Rubists would already be slinging circle-jerk accusations in this thread, so I guess there's no harm in saying that I reciprocate Sharting's feelings. I guess there also wouldn't be any harm in telling him that I would be amenable to looking into a timeshare in Panama City Beach or something, you know, just in case he'd be interested. Sharting's probably a consensus top five or ten commenter, but thought he should be mentioned. He and TDK are clearly two of the best, but also two of my personal favorites.

I also second StF's sentiment about BBAM. Guy brings it on the reg.

Coney dogs are delicious, but extremely hazardous to one's health.

    12. You're too kind, StF and Bugsled. Delusional, and possibly syphilitic, but kind.

And I...[sigh]...echo Echo's feelings on StF. Except that I actually haven't seen Bridesmaids yet, so feel free.

    14. Honestly, it would probably be Steve U with Hume a close second. I think I'm probably floored most often by EMS (as far as the angle he finds for some jokes are just so impressive. "man's laughter"? Serious?). But no one cracks me up as often as those two.

Like that "Shirley" comment today? What the fuck was that? I'm still not sure but it still cracked me up.

And I've brought this up before, but if you're relatively new around here. This still might be my favorite comment ever:

  4. I know there’s a reason why unstarred commenters are just that, but am I the only one noticing a serious lack of talent in that group lately? Feels like the farm system is barren.

    1. It seems like live chats are what bring in new commenters and there haven't been any in a long time.

    2. It's tremendously easy to find most comments (unstarred or not) lacking when compared with some of the fantastic work of the excellent commenters mentioned in the post above. Off the top of my head, I can think of Can I Borrow a Feeling, Toronto Maple Beef, and Radon Zeppelin as examples of unstarred commenters making me laugh lately.

And I can't recall seeing any other comments from him, but "Now I'm Prune Tracy!" had me giggling with this absurd joke: http://deadspin.com/5888036/reader-mail-all-the-letters-weve-gotten-from-one-persistent-critic?comment=47330722#comments

    3. Also, Rubio (For Her Pleasure) and stickinandmovin, both of whom are off to pretty good starts.

    4. Borrow a Feeling is close. He's had a few total whiffs, but you can see the effort. He's the next one starred, IMO.

      Delete
    5. Can-I-Borrow used to be starry, IIRC. He's a little hacktastic at times, but when he's on... line drives galore.

Barring his disappearing/ending up brain-scarred after mistakenly accepting one of Echo's invites to meet Ken Dryden, I would be shocked if Rubio didn't get "made" eventually.

Captain Homeless is doing all right of late, too.

    6. CIBAF hits it hard when he hits it, but man, does he hit some epic foul balls. He's as likely to craft a really solid one liner as he is to throw some tedious, tortured Korey Stringer thing into a totally unrelated post. Let's not forget that he got banned for telling the ninja to (essentially) fuck off and that "the internet will have its Simpsons Gifs" or something like that. I'm rooting for the guy, but that's a heavy trailer to pull.

    1. I suppose a link would help you discover why for yourselves.

    2. What happened to Deadspin's rigorous approval process? These seem to be Megan's first and only posts. Do you automatically get approved when you have a sexy avatar like Megan does?

    3. Somebody said that accounts made with twitter get auto-approved on Deadspin, for some glitchy reason, I think?

  6. Ugh. It could have been a full day of spider bite posts and I wouldn't have had a damn thing. But oh man did Amazing Sneiderwhatever's comment on the marathon post just kill me. That was very clever.

    2. Ha...no, it's not. But I wasn't sure where the "j" went (I would have guessed right), wasn't sure if there were one or two "n"s at the end (would have guessed wrong), and was too lazy to check.

  8. I'm somewhat confused on this reply

    http://deadspin.com/5888659/taunting-in-professional-bowling-is-the-best-taunting?comment=47416095#comments

Is Dave J. adding another layer of humor to my post? Is he ripping me/my post for being unclear? Is he just reiterating my joke? I'm honestly not sure. If it WAS ripping me, thinking that my above post was not sarcastic, could I have framed it another way in order to have been more clear? It's a shit joke, but please indulge me anyway.

    1. I have read his reply a dozen times and gotten a different vibe each time. This is typically why many people believe in +1ing only unless it's an obvious comedy pyramid situation. Especially when you're someone like Dave J., who as far as I can tell doesn't make jokes.

      Delete
    2. I'm pretty sure he was just echoing your joke, not putting it down. He could have been quite a bit clearer in his approach, but it doesn't at all seem to me to be snark.
