MKM Open Thread (Mar. 19, 2012)

Welcome to your MKM Blog open thread for March 19, 2012, Day 3 of the Great Alex Smith Watch of 2012.

Goooood morning, everyone.  I'm feeling better today and hopefully most of you have been released from the hospital and/or prison after that stunt you pulled on St. Patrick's Day.  You know the one I'm talking about.  I'm still not sure how you got a whole frying pan in there.

Anyway, last week was sort of derailed due to me turning into Gwyneth Paltrow mid-way through it, but we'll be rolling out some new features soon, so keep the good comments coming here and on Deadspin.

Here's a Youtube clip to get you started.

  1. You turned into a self important bitch halfway through last week? Don't be so hard on yourself man, that happened much longer ago than last week.

  2. I blame you IMG. I'm healthy as a horse, then I read all your sick posts, and now it sounds like Skrillex when I talk.

I hope someone with more Deadspin clout than I will tell Mike Shanahan's Bronzer that he did not, in fact, fix anything.

    1. I didn't want to be the bitchy guy and say that myself, so thanks.

    2. Well I posted a little blurb over here about out of bounds replies a few days ago. Hopefully that didn't make me the bitchy guy, but I had finally reached a point where I couldn't take it. For every such reply I address, I see a hundred that I don't. This one here (to you) is exactly the kind of shit that catches my ire.

  4. @Gamboa Ha! That works too.

Raysism has himself a shitty reply in that thread, but the one to SSE is just the sort of obnoxious, Fark-level tripe that should be snuffed out before it spreads.

I think comedy pyramids should be encouraged whenever possible, but the trick there is to not step on the joke and you know, actually make your own joke. I think STF is good at that, but I find whenever I'm thinking of one, it's easier to just start my own thread.

You know how I know Deadspin commenting is dead? When my jaw-dropping, totally-not-a-reach Sixpence None the Richer joke doesn't get any love at all. How do you plebeians not recognize the brilliance of such an awe-inspiring bolt from the heavens?

  6. What I don't understand is all of the starred commenters I've never heard of dropping turds all over the place. Where the heck did these guys come from?

  7. Something tells me that awgreen88 doesn't spend too much time around these parts.

For those who can't read it, he replied to Triumph of the Will Clark's comment with "Not okay."

  8. Are the comments painfully slow to load for anyone else?

    1. No, just painful. (Universal Enveloping Algebra's, I mean.)

    2. Yes. For much of the day it would take a refresh or two of the page to get the story and/or comments to load correctly.

  9. To be honest, I don't know whether some of those guys are old stars from way before my time or brand new ones earned from the Fun Bag comment sections that I avoid like the plague.

  10. People are extremely rational.

Also, I didn't really want to get into this there, as it's not important, but Naps tweeted his number at someone the other day. Like he meant to DM it but sent it out to the world instead. I went back to find it, but he deleted it. I thought about calling him, but then realized that I'm not an insane person.

4thMolinaBrother should get his own episode of "My Strange Addiction: Piggybacking/Shitting On Someone Else's Comment".

It's like he just can't stop himself from doing it.

  12. Yeah, no idea, but I certainly didn't recognize many of the starred commenters today either. Maybe the tournament has brought commenters from the other Gawker sites over?

But yeah, rough day around Deadspin. It also might be a bit of the fact that many of us were simply still dragging from the weekend. I know my brain still feels as raw and destroyed as the rest of my body.

  13. Those are awesome, thanks for the link. Dean Berry is my favorite, because he felt the need to come back to that article, like, 2 years later in order to post his nonsense.

  14. It's been said before, but there's a certain ebb and flow to the quality of the comments on the site, much of which is due to the recent absence of many a great commenter (TDK, Hume, Steve U, etc.) Also, while I'm far from the local expert on humour, I think there's a serious lack of funny comments coming from the grey, besides Lord Comment, who is probably just one of us anyways.

  15. It would appear that a lot of commenters are under the impression that Drew's SAT column is an excuse to brag about their own SAT scores. I don't agree with that interpretation.

    1. I would like to take this opportunity to note that I scored a 57,000 on my SAT.

Of course, it was much harder then.

  16. All of this SAT talk has me thinking...

Say you have a circle jerk, with 9 separate points (jerks) along the circumference. If one of the points inexplicably vanishes, yet the circle remains, that point is still a jerk, right?

  17. Can someone explain the various Sheed'sBaldSpots and Azure Texans to me? For instance, is the one in DUAN right now the same as the real one?

    2. @BH:

You seem closer to understanding this than me. I have no idea what's going on here:

Could someone explain all of this?

    3. Are there various AzureTexans? I'm only aware of one.

    4. Whoops, sorry gang. I'm on cold medicine. I actually meant to say Arkansas Fred. But I won't rule out multiple Azure Texans at this point.

      Delete
    5. There have been a couple of versions of Arkansas Fredover the years. Not sure why, they're all the same person. As far as I know, there's never been more than one active at the same time.

As for Sheed, there are multiple accounts that are Sheed. Try to guess which ones. I think you'll be surprised!
