MKM Open Thread (April 11, 2012)

Don't look so disappointed when I walk in! Have I not tried my hardest to please you? Did you not enjoy the muffins?

You know what I enjoyed yesterday? The comments. Not here, so much. You guys are pouting, and your silence speaks volumes. But over on that site where we do the things that we talk about here. There was some good work done over there. I hope it continues today. And maybe it wouldn't kill you degenerates to show me a little effort over here. I bleed for you people. (Seriously, I'm shaving my scrotum as I type this.)

Look, we all miss IronMike. But that doesn't mean we can't have our own special brand of fun. IronMike balogs like this, CJ balogs like this. Show me how you balog below. The thread is open, much like Goatse.

  2. I like Deadspin because a 39-comment thread about Fidel Castro and Ozzie Guillen included differing viewpoints but was discussed civilly, logically, and with only one mention of Hitler. And the Hitler mention was actually germane (Thanks Marge Schott!)I'm not sure that could happen anywhere else on the internet. Good job, people.

    1. Agreed. We do intelligent discourse as well as anybody. Just less frequently.

  3. Is anyone else thoroughly confused by Burke's writeup of the daily screencap? I get the squid/ink part, but there is no chicken reference so it doesn't exactly tie to the picture. And the squid/ink part is, frankly, dull (the guy threw up ... is that all?).

Is there brilliance here that I am missing? It wouldn't be the first time.

    1. I second your comment. Please help. At the moment, all I've got is some commentary on frat/college guys, and how they like to drink and don't have money, all leading up to a possible joke about squid/ink.

    2. It's just a completely made up "art" piece of sorts, no??

    3. @Gamboa

I guess, but I just kept waiting for a punchline incorporating chickens and squids or some point beyond "poor people give blood and then can't hold their liquor." Whatever ... it's his piece to do with as he pleases - I just wasn't sure whether he's going for laughs, art, insight, etc.

    4. Oh, I'm not judging it on merit. Just saying that's how I took it, stylistically. It was definitely....different.

    5. It's like he's salting the earth with shitty posts so that no comments will grow.

    6. I'll be honest, "gronghi" in the pink made me chuckle with his "Da fuck did I just read?!?!" comment after that post.

    7. I'll do this if you let me explain my awesome jokes today.

Burke's just saying: "Look at this cookie-cutter dick college kid." He was definitely going for laughs, and it worked on me.

    8. I asked on Twitter for someone to explain that shit for me because I didn't get it nor think it was funny.

Also, it is a shitty replacement for Wakeup Deadspin.

  4. Don't worry, son. IMG was sent to a farm, where he's running around in a field with the other bloggers. He's having a great time!

  5. I'm starting to think Analysis Rube might have been right. I'm amazed that anyone can type any comments when you all have your hands on the dicks of the guys to the left and right of you, jerking them off because they made some stupid comment...and then when there's actual discussions, you're all, hey look at us! We didn't get into a Yahoo flame war! We won the internet!

  6. Crap, you guys. We let down someone who was looking for serious, hard-hitting debate. Now we may never get to hear the intellectual musings of rraattbbooyy.

  8. I keep hoping this will happen to the execrable TOTWC...

  9. Yeah, it certainly feels harmless...except for pulling quotes from his offer letter. Never good when you're hired as a reporter and your immediate response is to toe a privacy boundary with your new employer's in-house documents.

  10. And with one of the all time greatest misses of the point, take it away pink commenter theguy87:

"When did it fall on our shoulders to watch out for adults health? We don't write these articles about watching 300 lb people super-size it at Mc'Ds, we don't write these articles about 50+year olds hacking up a lung as they buy a carton of pall malls, we don't write these articles about families applying for the 6th credit card as they slip into the oblivion of debt, and we shouldn't write these articles about a guy who is willing to take a chance with an injury so he can live out his dream. And by the way, if this were an ankle injury that would leave him with roughly 10% chance of not being able to walk without a cane when he was 40 (isn't that a shit way to live out the second half of your life as well?) we wouldn't just not write some judgemental article about taking chances, we'd be calling him a hero who ignores pain for the good of the team (think: Roethlisberger, Ben)."

  12. Alright, I don't mean to do this but after two years of futile commenting I'm gonna ask, this isn't funny to anyone but me? http://deadspin.com/5901026/mark-reynolds-is-the-worst-third-baseman-in-baseball?comment=48779133#comments

    1. Correction: I didn't want to be that guy but I'm at a loss for thoughts...

    2. I'm just seeing it now, but I think it's funny. Keep your head up, man, you've done good stuff. Just because something isn't promoted/+1'ed doesn't mean it wasn't funny.

  13. Just one opinion, but it just took too much time to put it together - the powerful stroke part should have given it away, but using the "baseball sex bases" analogy in an actual baseball post is a bit confusing, especially when there is nothing sexual about the original post. Not a bad effort, but on a busy day like today it just took too long to decode. You do good work overall, though - don't take it personally.
