MKMOT (July 3rd, 2012)

Greetings. CJ number 040 here. I'm a late add to today's roster because apparently Marv got into a bit of trouble last night with an old friend. I think he said his name was Jack Daniels. He muttered something about a guy named James Beam stopping by as well. You gotta love Marv, he likes to make sure he doesn't lose touch with those friends who shaped him into the shell of a man he is today.

So, that Chrome extension, pretty great right? What will these nerds kids think of next? So here you go, here's your open thread to bitch, moan, complain, celebrate or discuss whatever and whomever you want.

And here's an early Happy 4th of July to all of you. Well, those of you who celebrate that holiday. I know we have some Canadian friends 'round here, but oddly they don't seem to have any 4th festivities up there. Weirdos.

Continued from yesterday, because not enough people participated.

      EMS

    2. A bunch of us are funny but considering 2012 alone and ignoring multiple-COTY winners (sorry EMS and Steve U), these four stand out in no order and with no prior research:

      Raysism, Gamboa, Sharting, BBAM.

I'm sure I forgot a bunch of other good ones too.

    3. There is definitely consensus among the four above, which are all worthy. I'll add SbV8, who has had some absolutely fantastic comments in the last few months.

    4. Understand that it murders my soul to write this, but:

Gamboa, and it is not fucking close. That's not to diminish anyone else's work, but the guy has lapped the field twice.

No disrespect to any of those four guys, and I appreciate your rationale about previous COTY winners, but I just don't see how any list can be made without Steve U. He's been in-fucking-credible this year.

    6. Thanks a ton to the people who actually threw my name in this discussion. Gamboa's right there but my vote goes to Steve U. Honorable mention to RMJ=H, who just slays me for reasons I can't quite put my finger on.

    7. I honestly have no idea who I would vote for, were I given a vote, but I do think that BBAM and Gamboa (hasn't commented in a week!) have been not around nearly enough for my taste. Come on back, fellas.

    8. Steve_U is fucking prime Ichiro. He makes good contact every at bat, starts more rallies than anyone else, occasionally blasts one out of the park, and plays every game.

That's awesome. You need an Ichiro. He's invaluable.

But, my MVP goes to prime Josh Hamilton, and that's Gamboa. Sure, he doesn't show up all the time, and yeah, he's got a nasty substance abuse problem that leads to some high profile embarrassments, and sure, when he pretends to be some nice religious guy, it sickens everybody because it is so transparently BS, but no else can change the game with one swing quite as easily as him, and no one else has done it as many times this season.

Look, Ichiro is a first ballot HOFer, and Hamilton is still a longshot. If you ask me which guy I would rather have to start a franchise, I'd take Ichiro every time. But if you ask me which guy is the MVP this season, it's Hamilton, and it ain't close.

I guess what I'm saying is, FUCK STEVE_U.

    9. I know he's not around much, but Phintastic is top notch. I think he might have made one funny comment this year...actually it might have been last year, but still, good stuff.

    10. I think I am a strong candidate. We're talking about the "Best Attendance" award, right?

Thanks to anyone who said anything nice about me. I agree with everyone else who was mentioned, and even IMG's analysis.

A sincere thank you to everybody who mentioned me, and if I had to pick it'd be between Raysism, sharting, and gamboa, if we are DQing EMS and Steve U.

If we're broadening from just the top 3, I think we should also mention BronzeHammer -- he's had some gems.

And that list above is ridiculous. I mean, come on. Left field???!?!

      PLUF ONE!

    15. I'd mention I'm too slow to play center but then Raysism would just list a bunch of his race times.

    16. +1 to that baseball lineup (though BBAM needs to be there somewhere). And damn, if I get Gamboa in front of me and EMS behind me, I'm going to see a lot of good pitches and have a bunch of RBI opportunities.

That doesn't sound like a homoerotic innuendo AT ALL.

  4. Aside from Craggs, I think Petchesky is my current favorite Deadspin writer. Consistently good work.

    1. I would even go so far as to say that Petchesky tops Craggs for me right now, and that's not meant to be a slight on Tommy in any way.

Barry has been consistently great lately. I've been particularly enamored by his NFL scandal coverage and hatred for Goodell, but just about everything he has been doing lately has been enjoyable.

    2. I've said on numerous occasions that I think Barry is the heart and soul of Deadspin for me. I mean, the commenters are, too, but of the guys who consistently turn out smart, funny, accessible pieces, Barry is number one. No knock on anyone else, there's tons of talent there, but the guy is a superstar.

Stupid question: I haven't been able to view the comments since Sunday. (Just a reader, no account.) The Gawker help desk hasn't seen fit to help me, so would you folks be so kind as to enlighten me?

    1. This is actually a pretty straightforward fix. Your computer is off.

      Delete
    2. Try clearing your cache. I have no idea what that means, but it is the only tech support option I know of.

Also, consider trying a different browser, if possible. Also, if you're on mobile deadspin, sometimes the comments don't load.

The combination of the serious tone and the commenter handle really distinguish this one.
