MKMUB Open Thread (July 6, 2012)

Welcome to your MKM Open Thread for July 6, 2012, the day you realized that all the weight you gained drinking that pony keg of Newcastle on July 4 is really the Higgs boson's fault.

Hi guys.  I'm up early, and don't see CJ or Marv or around, so I'll wade back into the fray and toss this up, since I already haphazardly threw up one open thread this morning, along with two gallons of T-bird and grapefruit juice.

I have to be honest: I am beginning to get used to the Kinja interface.  I've stopped using the blueTunic hack almost entirely.  Yes, the burner accounts are what they are, but we can overwhelm this with a  shock-and-awe display of excellent commenting, solid feedback (yes, I remain a fan of the +1, even if Kinja is not), and not feeding the trolls.

Let's do this.

  1. I believe that's called "Stockholm Syndrome."

  2. Ok, I don't know why, but now every single comment of mine is now at the top of the list, even if it surpasses much funnier comments with more +1s, or better discussions with more replies. Sorry, folks.

@Bronze...you're not special. Blue Tunic posted this comment on the forum dedicated to his Chrome extenstion...look.

They've quietly changed the functioning of the Kinja-promoted area to show the last one you personally commented in anyway (and apparently are continuing in that direction soon by showing your "friends" first, etc), so the whole concept of "see what's in the featured thread" before viewing all is losing its meaning. Perhaps I should go ahead and do that; still conflicted.

    1. I had surmised that this was the case.

I mean, I'm a great commenter, but I'm not as good as say, Raysism

So only on your screen are your comments always at the top.

    3. Ah, cool. I did think that could be the explanation, but I held out hope that I was ahead of RMJ=H in brand management, hair gel efficiency, AND comment ranking. Oh well.

What do you think - as far as Kinja goes (still a mess, of course), is putting your comment automatically ahead of the others better or worse? Seems like it's even worse, if you can imagine such a thing. It disrupts even further the vague notions we had about the order in which the comments were originally posted, which is not great.

    4. Unlike in my marriage, yes, I'm always on top.

@Bronze...I think it's weird to always have a comment thread you've contributed to at the top. I still prefer the old chronological way of doing things, so I use that extension. But I barely even read the comments now. There's too many youtube or yahoo type things going on, and IMG was right about those burner accounts in that open letter.

I am going back and forth between Kinja and blueTunic's fix now. In last night's DUAN, I made a comment that got 5 replies from individual commenters before I had a chance to get back on. In that specialized case, Kinja was manageable. Otherwise, it remains clunky and unusable. But blueTunic's fix also doesn't look that great - the font is big and the comments are pink (apparently only for me). Either way, it's not fun. Especially since, like you, most people are gone or leaving.

But I love the Burner accounts! Just now, I got a -1 from some asshole who decided to make that his first comment. Love it.

      @Bronzey

The handles are pink, but that doesn't really bother me. Yeah, the idea that there's no control and no approval process have made it pretty shitty. I didn't think it would matter. I figured there wouldn't be any influx of Yahoo type comments, but I also hadn't been able to see pink comments for a long time, so i don't know if they had increased...but yeah, the burners and not hard at all to make fake accounts with real handles (it takes what, a minute, to set up a fake gmail account?) bug me too much. I think i'm pretty much done with the commenting there. I'm not saying "I RETIRE!" like some have, but like I said, hardly read the comments now, so I'm not even really trying to think of any.

"Comment Faeries" is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. At least the ninjas sounded legit and meant business and actually could do something.

    2. Name aside, the condescending tone that they've adopted toward the commenters is getting old.

Toe the company line all you want, but don't treat us like we're solely responsible for all of this shit.

    3. They basically told Phin it was his fault that some guy told him to die.

    4. Without wading into the specifics of that incident, which seems likely to needlessly inflame things, I agree wholeheartedly that ignoring the trolls is the most important thing we should all be doing other than making hilarious jokes. I also don't think saying "you had a dismiss button, use it" is the same as saying it was Phin's fault. I think even Phin acknowledged as much on Spin.

I'm as frustrated as most of you are and I'm sure it's worse for the squadron. It is maddening to see all this shit clogging up the comments, but the best way to get past it is to do what we (other than Raysism) do best and that's to make funny clever original jokes. Like I said above, if we ignore them and carry on about our business, they will all flee to Gawker or Kotaku or wherever Raysism is needlessly trolling others that day.

    5. Sean,

Could you please address the "farting gold dust" allegation?

    6. Yeesh, why do I keep getting pulled into these things. I said I shouldn't have done what I did. I tried to diffuse it with kindness, and then later made a bad decision to attack the guy, though making your first comments attacks on me was pretty weak. Maybe putting those exchanges in that roundup wasn't for the best, but I thank Uwe for having my back.

Good advice though, I'm going to go enjoy my weekend.

Pixies sweat gold dust, faeries fart.

Oh man, I am so Kinja'd.
