MKM Blog Open Thread (Feb 19, 2012)

Welcome to your MKM Blog Open Thread for February 19, 2012, the day you finally got your money's worth out of that First Amendment kit you ordered from Legalzoom.com

Morning everyone. Yesterday was interesting. Hopefully, we can use today to discuss new issues, for example, the 10th Amendment's reservation of power to the States. What does that really mean in an age where your State allows anyone with a Panamanian medical degree to slang rocks as a treatment or anxiety?

Chat away. Let's watch the personal insults and accusations and focus on mocking the unfunny instead.

Love you!!!!!!

https://twitter.com/#!/bubbaprog/status/171287778041143296 Burke doesn't know who Evil Stewie is because he was too busy getting his PDH.

    Am I doing this right?

    FIRE!!!

  2. This was a good start for Sunday. First we had one of the funniest twists on an extended photo caption that I've seen.

Now, our favorite Venable has checked in to call out Burke yet again.

    It's a shame more people aren't around...

  3. Despite my limited knowledge of State laws, for that matter any American laws (since I'm a silly Canadian Eskimo), I can agree that Burke was mistaken to publish what he did, and more so, could have saved himself a lot of grief by making a self-deprecating joke and moving on. However, I think all this criticism of the site's writers in an open forum like a Deadspin comment thread is sophomoric and seems a little too much like Gawker for my liking. Yes, he made a mistake. Can we move on, or shall we continue ripping somebody, who, with Sean, do work on the weekend's to fill the void left by the other writers? Last time I checked, I haven't given Deadspin a single penny; keep this in mind. This is merely my opinion, and by no means am I slagging others for theirs.

    1. Burke is turning Deadspin into his personal playground to expound his half-baked, immature ideas. Deadspin writers inject their opinions but they're rarely (if ever) as stupid as Tiny Brain Tim's. Deadspin is (was?) known for well-thought-out commentary.

If it's starting to look like Gakwer, it's because a lot of Burke's posts look like one of Hamilton Nolan's pageview-whore troll-fails--the difference is that Tim seems to actually believe the childish horseshit he writes. It's sad, really.

From what I've seen, I wouldn't be surprised if Burke is lying about his CV.

    2. Okay, I don't want to break out comment_nIMGja but this is getting borderline. Also, cobra, your point is trite and unctuous. We don't need either extreme here. You can criticize editors for making an error, but do it thoughtfully and intelligently. Or, criticize a commenter for making an unfunny joke. Just be interesting and respect the most basic levels of polite discourse, you fucking babies.

    3. Pardon me, IMG, but why are you criticizing my comment? Is it not fair? I realize this is your site, and if you'd like me to take me 'trite and unctuous' comments elsewhere, so be it, but I was just trying to make a point, a point I thought was at least valid. Perhaps, as mentioned above, this was yesterday's fodder and you'd fancy moving-on - as I suggested in my original comment - which is fair. Just making a point.

Seriously, dude, when you bring up a point like that apropos nothing, and especially when you phrase it in a way that I've heard a million times before, it feels a little like you're putting an apple on Tim's desk. That's fine but it's not interesting, at least not to me, I don't see the need to crucify Burke over a harmless error which really is more about citing an unreliable source than any independent error Tim made, but he's a big boy who can handle himself.

Please don't feel like my response to your comment is any sort of indication as to whether or not I want you to post here. I don't claim any special standing as to what happens in the comment section beyond the most extreme circumstances where I need to delete something offensive. Your opinion may be more popular and meaningful than mine. I was just sharing my own personal reaction to your own personal reaction.

    5. Fair enough, IMG, you above all are entitled to your opinion, and you have made it in an eloquent and effective way. The hug is not necessary, I was just slightly surprised by your reaction. That is all.

  4. @ I think - you've made several valid points, some of which I agree with. There have been several posts during the weekends that have left me scratching my head, I guess Im just thankful that we have people committed to the site on the weekend's. Further, I'm a big fan of cheese-mac and owe him many a beer for his NFL previews and recaps; don't want to throw these two into the same category. My whole point is that I'm not a fan of commenters criticizing the writers in the comment threads, and if you are to do so, we are an intelligent lot, surely we can do so constructively criticize without being assholes.

    1. Well said, cobra. Totally agree.

You already begged yourself into getting a star, so I see no point in your sucking up to the editors at this point. Star security, perhaps?

    3. Dear Guy Who Never Forgets Things - while my consistency in making funny comments has declined because of a few reasons; one of which is relative to my workload - I believe I was deserving of my star at the time. Am I pleased that I received it from AJ during a clusterfuck of meta comments? No. Do I reckon I deserved it? Absolutely. Perhaps your opinions and that of many people on this specific site are too negative for my blood. Nonetheless, thank you for your opinion, whoever the heck you are.

  5. Every weekend day should have some type of open thread where the people that are around can congregate and discuss hoops, hockey, soccer, bowling, golf, Pawn Stars and Pet Sematary Two. The Knicks game alone would have generated thirty comments.

  6. @Guy who never forgets things : I think we can all agree that the Gawker comment section sucks, but at least they have the good sense to ban ad hominem attacks. "You got a star during an open chat = you don't deserve a star = you are sucking up to Burke"? Every link in that chain is bullshit.

@cobra - I'm not a Burke hater, but he dug his own hole on this one. Its fine to be wrong, but his arrogance in reply yesterday combined with his attacks on other writers certainly leaves him open to criticism, and criticizing him says nothing about Sean's work.

Speaking of, on a happier note, Sean's "balls" piece was fantastic.

  7. Damn, they should let you edit images. I tried to bail out NotMyFirstRo-Day-O--who has tits in his avatar if you haven't noticed, hit ctrl++--but Nibbles wouldn't have any edits.

Also, leave Brittney Cobra alone! Cobra is funny.

    1. Nibs doesn't seem to let you remove images during a comment edit... but he generally lets you sub in another one. So, yeah, a little switcheroo at least lets you post something fun, like an apologetic GIF, or gorillas doing it.

You should come up with a more clever name for "Our Most Popular Posts of the Month." Maybe something like "My Most Popular Posts of the Month."

  11. Easy fella. Sure, Burke may be a pedantic, thin-skinned, childish, illogical cretin, the kind of brat who takes his ball and goes home if he doesn't like the game.

But there's no need for homophobic insults, ok?
