MKM Open Thread (Feb. 22, 2012)
Welcome to your MKM Blog open thread for February 22, February 21, 2012, the day you actually started counting days you had left on vacation and a cup of your office's instant coffee began to sound really good.
Hey, I'm still on vacation. Two more days and you gave my undivided attention back. Til then, let's keep it clean, we're here to amuse our little group, not offend anyone. Be mindful of the line between towel snapping and anonymous trolling, ummkay?
Serious question - is it ever OK to put two jokes into one thread? I've never done it before and I don't see others do it often, but I don't know that I've seen a guideline about it and it does happen occasionally.
In this case, I honestly couldn't decide between the two that I made in the hockey post. Judging by the reaction I should have stuck with the first, but the correlation between what I think will work and what actually gets the +1's isn't perfect (e.g., in this case I liked my wang joke more, because I'm an immature idiot).
Anyway, this isn't about me, but about the etiquette - is it frowned upon, or is the bar for a second joke the same as the bar for a first? Does it matter how many other comments are in between?
I'm obviously not an authority on these matters, but I did this yesterday in the Manny thread, and the second joke got the good response. I feel comfortable with it if the jokes aren't using the same material or punchline, but typically only if it's a popular thread (so my comments don't dominate the post), and even then very rarely.
Incidentally, that post made me throw out all preconceived notions about the featured comment, as mine was the only one with replies and was not featured. Not that RMJ=H isn't excellent or deserving, but I thought I had the formula figured out.
I'd say don't be a weirdo carpet bombing the place, but if you think of another good joke later on, how can posting it be a bad thing? Think of the other side of the argument: "Hey- Dubai gets one and only bite at the apple. It's inappropriate for him to post another joke, and further contribute to the humor of the comment section in a (presumably) original way" Not a strong argument, I'd say.
So long as you're not being a pest and posting legit quality jokes, ignore anyone who insists on layering more arbitrary byzantine etiquette restrictions onto the comment section.
Works for me. Of course, that leaves you at the mercy of what I think is funny, but you have to deal with that in any case. So, the joke is on you either way.
Well, they say a picture is worth a thousand words, but I'm not sure. But one thing I am sure of - In Democratic America, +1 decide you.
So, on each of tomorrow's posts I'll post one cat photo and one thousand-word screed on why Deadspin has become hypocritical. Then, I'll count the +1s and, voila, we'll have our answer.
/ I'll also figure out how to say voila in Mandarin
Lodz is another city in Poland, so I assume he was going for the combination of a geography pun in homage to yours and "Oh Lord." But really I think he was just trying to show off his knowledge of unicode.
I think we should all be thankful for the small hiccups that crossposting to Gawker sometimes elicits. Have you seen the "transvaginal probe" story posted on Jezebel/Gizmodo? Yeesh.
Thanks for the +1 btw. It was weird just hanging out in that thread with that rambling comment and the new guy, scotchnaut.
For some reason, I can't submit a comment on the LeBron James waitress story. When I click submit, my comment is there, but when I reload the page it isn't. The only comment on the story is by a grey guy named Canabian.
Right? Or is it just me, and you see my hilarious Mississippi joke three times?
I do both of those things in truck stop locker rooms!!!!1

If it's funny, post again. It does happen on a regular basis; the guy I see (saw) doing it the most is Hatey (to, let's say, mixed effect).
DeleteOn the other hand, Sharting had an epic day with multiple posts in the original Kronum thread.
Again, if it's funny, go for it.

I do it. Ray does it. Everybody does it. Feels good!
DeleteRaysism does it? Fine, I get it -- I'll stop.
DeleteYeah, I'd just go with the general rule...be funny. If you can do that a few separate times within a post, no need to hesitate.
DeleteBut like pictures or anything else, a bunch of comments on one post draw attention...and you'll look like Raysism.
Can anyone explain this response to me?
ReplyDeleteI'm reading it as a Polish "Oh Lord" pun.
DeleteLodz is another city in Poland, so I assume he was going for the combination of a geography pun in homage to yours and "Oh Lord." But really I think he was just trying to show off his knowledge of unicode.
DeleteI knew about the city, but get it now that you say "Oh Lord."
DeleteThanks to both.
Crossposting? Yay!

What a weirdo, that one. And starred, no less? There's no finer example of the Peater Principle.

Are you so drunk during your vacation that you're already counting the 21st a lost day, IMG?
ReplyDeleteHow To Give A Plus 1: A Primer.
ReplyDelete1. Hold the "shift" key while pressing the +/= key
2. Press the "1" key
3. Click "submit"
4. Voila!
Is that really so fucking hard?
Yup. For that guy, it is apparently impossible.
Delete-Talib's Rap Sheet
If Ol' Shockavatar can do it, ANYONE can do it.

It might just be this shitty netbook, because Amazing Sneijderman posted something.

Nah, I had the exact same problem you did. It took 35 minutes before my comment showed up after refreshing.
DeleteOh man. There it is! Four times.
DeleteWell. This is embarrassing.

On second thought, maybe I was the lucky one...Joner Baloner must have hit submit 10 times.
DeleteComment Save Fail --- Gotta admit I'm not really a fan of his sense of humor.
