FUCKING CUT THE SHIT

NO NO NO NO NO NO.

We do not do little online CSI investigations of commenters on here.  I get that Hatey is not popular with a certain crowd that hangs out in the comments here, but outing him or anyone else is completely verboten.  If shit like that continues, I will fucking flip the switch on this thing once and for all.

EDIT: On the upside, I'm pretty sure whoever thinks they outed Hatey got the wrong guy anyway.

  2. I especially appreciate this rule, because, in the heat of passion, I accidentally told you my real name. Unfortunately by "the heat of passion" I mean that I found out some jerk already had stuartscottseye@gmail.com and I was too lazy to make a different email address.

Outing folks is definitely not cool. Unless it's Raysism because, well, fuck that guy.

    1. I'll be honest, I know a lot of Deadspin commenters' real names. And yet no one yet has ever come knocking on my door asking for the inside scoop on StuartScottsEye.

Your secret is safe with me.

    3. @IMG, Glad you were around to catch that. And yeah, I'd trust most of you with my real name...it's not like I'm trying to run for president some day. But it's just so embarrassingly pathetic to hunt down someone else's information and post it.

I don't begin to understand the thought process that goes into that. "It's like, 'Look, there's an elephant. Quick...let's drain its blood to paint my boathouse.'"

    4. It's funny you say that. I remember reading an article about an online hunting website. This is a website where you literally log on and remotely control a real gun and shoot real animals.

The founder said he came up with the idea when he was playing around on an internet website that had a live webcam of the woods or whatever and he saw the most beautiful deer ever and found himself wishing he had a gun.

That's when I knew that I have nothing in common with a hunter. "Oh that's gorgeous. I bet it would be even better with its brains splattered and a bunch of orphaned children."

    6. Oh Jesus. While I have no interest in hunting whatsoever I definitely don't begrudge anyone the hobby as long as I don't have any chance of being shot accidentally.

But that's just horrible. And feels...wrong. That's not sport or necessity. That's just "hey...how much would y'all pay to kill something?"

(And just to clarify since the elephant line seems super random if you're unfamiliar...it's a quote from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang...phenomenally clever movie if you haven't seen it.)

    7. I'm a fucking raving PETA member, so I try not to take my opinions very seriously. I get the appeal of hunting generically, though in practice it would disgust me. Unless it was for Angels fans, in which case game on.

Never seen it. I'll add it to the queue.

  3. My issue has never been with Deadspin guys knowing my real name, but with people in real life knowing that I comment on this cesspool of internet filth that only exists to ruin the lives of American icons like Brett Favre and Sean Salisbury.

  4. I'm disgusted by the whole thing. The internet is a fucked up place, but this really takes the cake.

I mean, a lacrosse forum? Jesus.

  5. I sincerely doubt that the Hatey haters would be considered a "crowd". It's most likely just one or two jealous chickenshits who post lots of anonymous comments to make it seem like more people share their stupid opinion.

  6. I have no idea who Hatey is in real life, but if he isn't truly a 400 pound grizzly bear then I will be severely disappointed. Every time he goes away for a bit, I just assume he is off eating a deer somewhere, or hiding behind a rock to avoid a bloodthirsty Sarah Palin.

Also, I missed whatever happened (damn jet lag), but it sounds like a dick move. But why do folks care so much about protecting their anonymity? Does anyone here really think that they are so special in real life, or their comments here are so inflammatory, that putting the worlds together will have any real impact? Plenty of people here know my name and I've even met a few in person - it hasn't exactly turned my world upside down.

On that note, I'm heading for BBQ at Hill Country as soon as they open. I'll be the sad-looking guy in the corner shoving 20 pounds of brisket in his mouth if anyone wants to say "hi."

    1. @ Dubai

I don't think it's necessarily that people are desperate to remain anonymous, but if they choose not to reveal their real identities like many of us have, that is their right.

It's somewhat similar to the entire Drew outing DadBoner thing. It's not that it made a huge difference, but the guy had created a persona for himself and it became apparent that he did not want his true identity to be revealed. For someone else to come in and expose them anyway just seems like a dick move.

Also, and I know this is a long shot, but if a savvy employer were to connect the dots and figure out that one of their employees or prospective employees made some of the off-color comments (or just dicked around on the internet as much as we do) that have been said around here, that could be bad.

    2. Fair point about work. I guess if someone could go out of their way to figure out who you are here, it isn't much a leap that they could email your work too.

    3. That actually happened to Kid Canada. Seriously. Someone got pissed at a comment he made, figured out who he was, and called his boss. He got into a bunch of trouble, I believe.

    6. Steve U's comment bothered me quite a bit, so I dug into it. The worst part about it was that the rat was apparently the author of the post.

Here is the ombudsman address regarding the situation.

Supposedly this the article and comment that started everything
