MKM Open Thread (Mar 30, 2012)

Welcome to your MKM Blog open thread for March 30, 2012, the day you won the $600 million Mega Millions lottery and then just blew all your earnings on hats.

Good morning, and a happy Friday to all of you, dear readers.  It doesn't look like there have been any new changes to the Deadspin commenting system today, so I'm afraid we'll need to find something else to freak out about today...

Yaaaaggghgghghds!!!!! Fucking Sharks!!!

Ah, that's better.

Anyway, have a good day, be funny, don't be dicks or anything, and I'll see you all later.  Hell, I'll even toss in a Youtube clip to get you started.

  1. There's no need to even comment on shit like this. The ninjas will rightfully exile it and ban the commenter as soon as they see it.

My first thought was that the new commenting system might be more porous, but it looks like there are still pinks, so I'm not sure how this guy got approved. In any event, bye soon, dickhead.

    1. I pm'd Barry and he banned him immediately, of course. That kind of crap is infuriating.

    2. I have never once dealt out vigilantly justice, but I wanted so bad to tell that guy to get the hell out. Glad I didn't - comment was taken care of by Barry.

    3. There are definitely some weird glitches, though. A couple of days ago, I replied to a comment on Kotaku, where I'm not even approved. After I replied, my reply was in pink, but the comment that I replied to now said "approved by Raysism". Then Hume replied to me to get me out of the pink.

So maybe there are some pores in the system. And that post didn't make me feel very good about what we might see in the future.

    4. I think the new log-in system accidentally created a wormhole to Yahoo! or some other equally disturbed racist commenter base. Check out the newer pink comments on the soccer fight post.

Looks like the new commenter manifesto will have to read: "Be funny. Don't be unfunny. And please don't be racist."

    5. I hate ignorant bullshit like that. McCullogh is clearly an Irish name.

    6. How do the pinks get approved? Thanks.

    1. Ok, I'll bite. Leaving myself off the list, and with no research, here's what comes to mind based on this year only and with apologies to the rest of you who are all tied for fourth:

      3. BBAM
      2. Gamboa
      1. [intentionally left off list]

    2. Looking through the comments I've bookmarked this year, I see a lot of:

      -Steve U
      -Mantis Toboggan, MD
      -Raysism

But you really can't go wrong with BBAM, Gamboa, Echo, EMS, etc.

    3. 1) every pink comment
      2) cobra, brah!
      3) cobra, brah!

    4. In no particular order...

      Bevraj of Choice
      Eddie Murray Sparkles
      Lionel Osbourne.

AzureTexan would make the list if he commented more often. Like BronzeHammer said though, that's not to say there aren't other guys who bring the funny on a regular basis, but those are the first 3 I think of.

    5. I always knew I liked you, Raysism, and not just because of my bigoted upbringing.

And if I had to pick three, in no particular order, I'd say Raysism, EMS, and AOBTS.

  3. It cuts me deep to write this (in no order):

    1. Gamboa
    2. EMS (obligatory)
    3, Echo

Ray, you were closer to cracking that than I would like to admit.

Still think my crossword puzzle comment is comment of the year though!!! Spread the gospel!!!

    1. I'm sitting out the list thing, but the props from you guys are certainly reciprocated.

Commenting has been a challenge lately. I sincerely appreciate the shouts.

    2. What Gamboa said.

    3. Same Sad Echo errata: He can't sit anything out because of his massive hemorrhoids!!1!1!

Also, I should probably admit that EMS and Bevraj are only omitted from my list because they don't need another hand job from me to know how good they are, and I think we need some new COTY blood. Those two and Steve U could probably win the thing every year if they wanted to comment a lot.

  4. Who do you all have in the Moderator Pool conversion that is about to take place?

Obviously, IMG because he positioned himself months ago with this Tumblr/Blog/Prodigy/Word Press thing.

  6. Does anyone know the deal with commenting on republished stories? My unstarred deadspin status doesn't seem to be enough from keeping me out of the pink in the the NBA twitter t-shirts post. I'd understand if it was an external link, but it doesn't seem to be.

Also, it's not like I made a great comment or anything, but holy hell those Gizmodo comments are awful.

    1. I'm not sure what's gong on there. Cobra is starred in his avatar, but his comment is pink. When you click on a specific comment, it takes you to Gizmodo.

Also, did this comment confuse the hell out of anyone else? I re-read it like 5 times trying to figure out what was changed. (SPOILER ALERT: NOTHING!!) Is this just a long winded way to saying "I agree with you?"

    2. Oops I'm an idiot, and apparently have low reading comprehension. He took out "meatheads" from the original.

    3. He also put in a subliminal message telling us to overthrow the government. Nobody else sees this?

  7. So, remember a few days ago when a question about Trayvon prompted a brief discussion about in bounds vs. out-of-bounds comment topics?

Again, I don't know how to explain where I draw that line, but I simply could not have pulled the trigger on Freeman's joke in the Haney thread (I don't even bother attempting to hyperlink on here). And I've done some notably tasteless stuff. This is not a bash on Freeman at all. Just an interesting discussion (to me anyway).

I just wish I could articulate my "line" on these things, even to myself. My own inconsistency frustrates me.

    1. It has to do with the tricky nature of the cross-posts. Think of it as though you're viewing the article on Deadspin, but it's a Gizmodo article. So you're seeing your star (in Cobra's case) because you have one on Deadspin, but your comment is pink because you're not approved on Gizmodo.

This caused no end of drama in one of the early Grierson-Leitch posts, when some Gawkertard got moved off-thread and was all SINCE WHEN DO THE COMMENT NINJAS GET TO MODERATE GAWKER!!1! and the ninjas were all THIS IS DEADSPIN!!1! and the Gawkertards were all BUT I'M VIEWING IT ON GAWKER!!1! and the ninjas were all OH SO YOU MUST BE A STUPID THEN.

    2. Ooops, that's supposed to be in reply to Joner above.

    3. Cone jokes perfectly illustrate way out-of-bounds.

    4. I didn't even READ that article!

  8. In my head, I think it's the same as using tired subject matter (i.e. Sandusky), if you are going to do it, it had better be damn good. I also think it helps for the joke to be (at least tangentially) related to the post. AOBTS's great Twin-Towers joke was in a post about 9-11. However, we've seen that there are exceptions to every rule as well. I can't think of a specific example, but I know I've laughed pretty hard at a joke like that just coming completely out of left field, usually based on a random line of text.
