MKM Open Thread (Apr. 3, 2012)

Welcome to your MKM Blog open thread for April 3, 2012, the day your faith in God was finally rewarded.

Good morning, and welcome to your chance to comment about comments on a site that seems to be going through a drought of comments.  This is a hell of a business model, isn't it?  Good thing I already cashed out all my stock options.

Anyway, say something funny today.  No one will see if, because there will be three new posts up in the time it took you to compose it.  But here's a Youtube clip for you anyway.

RANK YOUR TOP THREE DEADSPIN COMMENTER SCREEN NAMES BELOW

    1. I've always had the impression that most are just recycled fantasy team names...the garden variety "AthleteName's(insert ailment/calamity)." My vote for the all-time WORST in that category was "RonArtestTableLeg." Forced, tenuous, lazy - the screenname equivalent of an "I know there's a joke in there somewhere" comment.

  2. I hate to do this, but:

Maybe it's not the most sophisticated joke ever, but I cracked myself up with this. C'est la vie! The laughs are their own reward, I guess.

    2. When the first FUCKING breath of winter through the HELL flowers is icing
And you look to the north and the pale DEATH moon is rising
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the BITCHASS world to mourn
In the distance, hear the laughter of the last DEMON unicorn

    1. It does at least serve as a test for "Ninja Destarring Speed."

    2. I've not done this for real (my earlier rant against fat-leavher was a poorly executed roast), but I feel the need to rant about a commenter:
HOLY SHIT IS SHE A FUCKING TERRIBLE COMMENTER! Half the time she confuses Deadspin for azdesertswarm.com. Too many of her comments are lame put downs of ASU that are devoid of any attempt at humor. We get it honey, you're an Arizona fan (as am I). Frankly, she should have been destarred months ago for this:

    3. What a well-deserved de-starring. She's terrible.

  4. I hope I'm not late to the party here, but I'm having a lot of trouble logging in today. I know there was the whole "connect your account to twitter" or whatever it was, but every time I try to sign in, it tells me to connect through the twitter account I signed up with, so I click it, and then it just tells me to login again. What am I doing wrong?

    1. I was having the same issue with IE. I cleared my cache and retried to no avail. So now I'm using Chrome and I'm working. I'm still going to work on getting it working on IE.

  6. Question regarding fair/foul commenting.

On the minor league baseball post, I made a comment that was very mediocre. However, I hit cancel on several iterations of the joke based on the quoted text that I enjoyed quite a bit more, but could potentially have been perceived as shots at Lily Rothman. They weren't especially mean, but the fact that a writer was involved in the joke at all led me to stay away from it.

The Slate/Deadspin relationship, and the fact that the post was essentially an endorsement from Dom were both reasons for staying away, but does anyone have any thoughts on whether or not a joke that incorporated Lily would have been fair game?

    2. I thought so, but I wasn't sure if it conflicted with the "Writers are off-limits" thing.

    3. ...and just to be clear, I know what you were getting at with your question about the one and only rule. I just know there are other gray areas that people tend to be careful around, and this felt like one of those.

    4. Ha, yeah, I understand. And I'm with you, I'd hesitate if I thought something was a touch too mean spirited about a writer/contributer (except for Moe), but I don't think you would get ninja'd if it was a joke.

  7. Granted I somehow missed the whole explanation of how it started and what the fuss was (also, too lazy/don't care enough to go back and look) but I think the Craig James 5 Dead Hookers thing has had all good material squeeze out of it by this point

  8. Am I the only one who doesn't get what Scocca is trying to say in the Ripken post? There are far bigger pieces of bullshit than that to pick on in the world of baseball journalism.

    1. Imagine this is an edit: I'm not trying to shit talk, I just sincerely don't understand what he seems to be raging about. At first I thought he was saying that the homer didn't actually happen. I don't think it's crazy to say that a guy who's down in a 3-0 count might throw one right down the middle just to try to get a strike. I think a pitcher can be doing that without trying to give Ripken a chance to hit one out. I have no idea what I'm saying, really. Just confused.

    2. I think he was saying that Dan Connolly was implying that maybe Boskie purposefully gave Ripken a chance to hit a homerun by grooving a pitch, as opposed to just making sure he got a strike: "Perhaps Shawn Boskie was trying to make this a special, memorable evening for the entire Baltimore lineup?"

...And then talking about what a stupid insinuation that would be. I actually thought he was implying that the homer didn't happen, too, at first.

    3. When I read the article I thought that a grooved pitch implied the pitcher was basically floating one down the middle to him to let him crank one (I think I've seen this happen in Ripken's last All-Star Game strangely enough).

But I just checked and your right...grooved just means down the middle and doesn't imply you went easy. Which completely changes the article. Dan might have been under the same impression.

    4. Don't tell me what to do! And, yeah. I saw that. It (the original article) was just poorly written, nothing to get too worked up over. Who knows.

  9. Is the "Better Know an Ump" thing a callout to KSK? Or did KSK get it from Deadspin? Or am I overthinking everything?

  10. I just read the comments (don't ask why) in Will's Titanic piece. I now want to murder a baby fur seal.
But that retard Lauren jo got unstarred, so that does make me feel better. I really like how she can't believe it and she's so shocked. Might have been the worst starred commenter in history. Nah, no might have. She was.

    2. Crap, you can't see moved pink comments. Something along the lines of "DUAN is a giant circlejerk, and I don't know how you have time to do the stuff you say you do because you spend 10 hours a day commenting here and the other 14 nurturing your alcoholism. Go outside." I think this was because of the long book thread? Also, when are we supposed to sleep? There's not enough time in the day, I swear.
