  1. Finally! Great song choice. I can point you to a whole bunch of these, with banjos and whistlin' and people just ridin' along singin' to their horses! Matter of fact I'll throw one in that's got whistlin' in place of any singin' whatsoever:

    The Happy Whistler

We can have this place covered in cow manure in no time at all!

    1. I did neglect to mention the horse's thoughts on his singing companion. [If this guy doesn't shut the fuck up RIGHT NOW I'm gonna throw his caterwauling ass smack dab in the middle of the next cactus we pass.]

  2. I might have mentioned this on DUAN! a little while ago...

My band has been asked to play a Halloween tribute show. Basically, four local bands will be playing an entire set by one specific artist. Our friends the amazing Poison Control Center are doing a set of Bowie. Another group of friends are getting together for a one-off performance of Presidents of the United States of America. Good, solid fun stuff.

Originally, my band decided on doing a set of Sonic Youth. We're all huge SY fans, and were excited to give it a shot. The thing is (besides the sheer fact that Thurston and Lee play each song with about 50 different tunings) is the fact that not many people are going to know a lot of Sonic Youth songs. The average person knows probably Kool Thing and maybe Bull in the Heather and that's about it. We were thinking of playing deep cuts off of their 1987 album EVOL for god's sake. Who's really going to want to sit through that after seeing dudes jump around to Lump??

So we've switched gears and are thinking of doing Velvet Underground, which is fucking awesome, IMO. But I'm thinking they still might be a little obscure. I once saw a guy do a cover of Who Loves the Sun in a coffee shop and almost shit myself because it was awesome, but I'm Super-nerdo-music guy. I think I was the only person in the place who noticed. And again, my bandmates are thinking of doing Venus in Furs or the 17 minute Sister Ray.

So, I ask you: If you walked into a club and saw a band playing a bunch of Velvet Underground tunes -- I'm talking about well known stuff like Sweet Jane and Waiting for the Man and Pale Blue Eyes -- would you recognize it/enjoy it??

    1. As someone who hates Lou Reed with the burning fury of a thousand suns, and thinks he's probably the most over-rated musician in history: no, I wouldn't enjoy it.

I do hear good things about this Happy Whistler chap, though.

    2. If I were to wander into a club on Halloween, I'd probably want to hear something a little "scarier" than VU. Like the Misfits, or Celine Dion.

Then again, Venus in Furs might be the best halloween song ever, so long as your band includes the requisite viola.

    3. As someone who hates people who hate Lou Reed with the burning fury of a thousand suns with the burning fury of a thousand thousand suns, I say you should definitely do Velvet Underground. Especially if you're going to throw in All Tomorrow's Parties and do a dead-ass Nico impersonation.

      Then it's settled!

    4. Yes, one should always take musical advice from someone who named himself after the world's most annoying instrument.

  3. Here are three songs that I listened to in high school that I haven't heard in a while:

    This, this and this.
