MKMOT (November 2, 2012)

I totally forgot how to do this. I think I'm supposed to jump start conversation with an anecdote about long-distance running or something, but I have none. Little help?

Look, the 50 Days was just an experiment of sorts. An exercise in actual structure, meant to help combat writer's block. Clearly, it didn't work. But it really doesn't matter. My favorite content always has been, and still remains, what lies below. That is, when you fools choose to partake. And I've come to realize that I have very little control over when that will be. I can give you specific topical guidance or one sentence of utter gibberish, and the bottom line is that you'll play when you feel like playing. And lately, that's been infrequently, Maybe substantive blogs are the new thing. If that's what blows your skirt up, so be it. But that's not really what we do here. Guys Who know the balog know this, and hopefully they will remember the value of a place where they are the stars, and substance only gets the occasional bit part.

It's right here, and it's open.

  1. One is not comfortable with the idea of you sitting around thinking about one's skirt being blown up. One is a modest person. And one hasn't shaved one's legs in years.

    1. It's kind of a relief, isn't it? Read some great pieces unmarred by terrible commenting, interact here and at HFTE, make jokes on Twitter. It's not the same, no, but it's working.

  5. I think during such tough times it is important that we unite together and support a good cause. Despite all the destruction and devastation that surrounds the event, I think it is important that the people of our great nation support the Kenyans and their quest for a 17th NYC Marathon victory!

  6. Wow. Great piece on Nate Silver posted on Fake Deadspin. The current backlash against stats geeks by political pundits is compared to the backlash against stats geeks by baseball people.

    1. Agreed. Very well written, well documented, and an interesting read. The best part is that because it is on the update server we don't have to read the inevitable "discussion" among idiots screaming about political bias after reading the first paragraph.

    2. I haven't read that one yet, but Mobutu's piece on the same topic over at Gawker is, predictably, awesome.

    3. I've read them both, and they both make similar points in different fashion. Roher's is just a cut & dried journo piece, while Mobutu's throws in funny sarcastic shit to make a point.

Anyway, I actually had no idea that Silver was previously a baseball stats guy. I'd only heard about him in the past month or two leading up to the election. I just find the comparison between angered political pundits and "you can't measure heart and hussle" guys extremely apt.

The whole current backlash against Silver is really so shitty. Why can't we just appreciate a guy who fucking slaved over a shit-ton of data to devise a method to predict the outcome of an extremely complicated event? He's really putting himself out there. As Roher mentioned, his career is on the line with this one.

    4. I just checked it out, and I agree -- the old sportswriters do resemble idiotic political pundits. That was a great pull.

In addition, the fact that Silver's career depends on the outcome of the election while highly-compensated professional bloviators like Joe Scarborough survive like cockroaches is nauseating.

    5. Exactly. It's just numbers. If the numbers were leaning toward Romney, you better believe Silver's metrics would as well. Unfortunately for the blowhards, that's just not the case.

(And yes, I understand there are blowhards on the left who would attack him if he had Romney in front.)

Also, the confusion over popular vote polls and Silver's win probability (now over 80%) is mind boggling. The popular voting polls show a "coin flip." That's what the pundits key on. Obama's leads in multiple swing states (Ohio being the most important), give him a better probability of pulling it off. This is stats shit that you learn in high school.

  7. I've got to admit, it feels good to get back to great music. If you don't click play today, for the first time in almost two months, you're doing yourself a disservice.

Also, Lords of Balogger, STOP FUCKING WITH MY POLLS!!!

[A deafening silence strikes the room]

[Desean Jackson jumps out of his seat]

[Andy Reid quickly knocks over Michael Vick and sits on his head]

Reid: “I’m not a player, I just CRUSH a lot!!”
