MKMOT (June 11, 2012)

Welcome back, Guys Who Are Scared To Comment On The Weekends Because They Are Insecure About What It Says About Their Lives. It's Monday now, so you can end the charade.

Post all of those gems that you were bursting at the seams to let out on Saturday and Sunday. It's not like Powwow has become any less of a threat to the free world, or unethical repliers have suddenly been eradicated. So let's make up for the last few days, shall we?

This balog is born anew on Mondays. Let's raise this child as the village of inadequate retreads that we are. Be caring nurturers below this video. It's open.

  1. Great way to start the week out, wattznext. That's some fabulous commenting right there.

In his defense, my comment sort of deserved to be shat upon.

  3. Wrong. Should have chosen "When I'm Small" instead. Another misstep by Skeevy.

Not that there's any way that the fine readers of this balog haven't already seen this, but this RMJ=H comment was goddamn amazing.

  5. Be careful of editing already edited comments. Sometimes you accidentally submit an unpolished comment that doesn't get the tone right.

And then there's no edit option and you're stuck with whatever bullshit is left up there.

    Ugh.

Tommy moved this comment even though it was perfectly accurate because he didn't like the message.

Perhaps there is a downside to letting a 20-something immature and insecure guy who aspires to sit at the big kids' table because he hopes that it will mask his own mediocre talent run the show?

Look, I know most of you like the guy, but he has shown himself to have poor judgement (see the live photoblog of an ESPN meeting, or the Indian help center post), poor logic (see this article) and strong biases (see every Tebow article he's ever written).

He's not going to bring down Deadspin - its momentum will carry him - but he is in way over his head.

    1. He is clearly thin-skinned and doesn't want any criticism from the peanut gallery, so we'll just have to roll with that.

    2. @MaverickIsAirborne

The guy cares ten times as much about Deadspin's comments as AJ did. I think he deserves a little latitude to deal with the kinds of pricks who take snotty shots at his website's content.

    3. @Mav -

Did Craggs move any of the comments that trashed him personally, his performance as EIC, and the site itself in the aftermath of that EA Customer Support article that everybody hated?

      No. He did not.

For that matter, when he took the reins as EIC, one of his first acts was to give Black Godfather a star for calling him a coward.

This "thin-skinned" criticism holds absolutely no water.

    4. @Sharting

His exchange with Bev a couple of weeks ago provides much evidence to the contrary.

      Delete
    5. I'm not going to get into the specifics of that here, because I love both Bev and Craggs to death and I don't think that exchange reflected all that well on either of them. But I will say that I respectfully but wholeheartedly disagree with you that it's evidence of thin skin on Craggs's part, and leave it at that.

    6. I can't fucking believe you're going back to that Bev comment. You've totally missed the point, you don't understand what happened there at all, and because of that, you shouldn't be talking about it at all.

For what it's worth, I am squarely in the camp of All Over But The Sharting and Rare Endangered Vuvuzela. Deadspin has a tremendous writer and editor as the Editor in Chief, a guy who, as was already pointed out, actually gives a damn about the quality of commentary on his site. How do you guys respond? You throw a fucking tantrum every time he executes any discretion over the right of the commenters on his site to beat up his content.

Honestly, on days like today, I read the comments on Deadspin and I read the comments here on MKMUB and I fucking wish for a big ol' purge. Some of you are so incredibly spoiled.

You can just go straight to your room for that kind of sass, mister!

...and don't even THINK about looking for yourself in tonight's roundup!

    8. Even as a person who has not personally devolved to the point where I would give a rat's ass about the individual personalities of Deadspin editors, I can say that with the removal of the offending remark, the comment thread on that triviality of a story is as smooth as Rakim's flow and as readable as a large-print book after successful Lasik surgery.

      Delete
    9. For that matter, RMJ=H's (very good) comment about PowWow in that very same thread didn't get moved. If that's not "criticism from the peanut gallery," then what is it?

      Delete
    10. I never said it wasn't. It always is, by the very definition of arbitrary, as you (needlessly and hilariously, although not for the reason you probably think) point out. The only part I dispute is whether it means Craggs is thin-skinned, or whether it's unfair. He's not; it's not.

      Delete
    11. I think this is a completely pointless argument/accusation. There will always be people yelling that the editor is ruining Deadspin.

I don't anyone was right saying it about Leitch (although I missed much of that Deadspin era).

I think they were wrong saying it about Daulerio. He improved Deadspin in any measurable metric as a website and I personally think he left the writing in better condition than he found it. Arguing the writing quality over time is such a matter of taste it's a waste of time.

Craggs has not been running things long enough to make arcing generalizations, powwow isn't of his doing (and I think causing a lot of generalized outrage that's spilling over), and he's a damn phenomenal writer.

So yeah, if someone presents a seemingly logical claim that X ruined Deadspin those are my arguments. So it doesn't necessarily apply here, since the comment that started this is so fucking ridiculous I don't know where to begin.

    12. Shockingly, a comment asserting that Craggs is immature, insecure, and in over his head attracted the attention of a few immature and insecure guys who feel the need to defend a guy whom they "love to death" because he validates their hope that writing long diatribes on insignificant internet sites is a path to relevance. On the plus side, we were blessed by a cameo from the ultimate arbiter of funny - a gentleman who sporadically creates a blog that praises his friends using pseudo-intellectual jargon while deconstructing an endless series of puns that any of the site's hipster editors or commenters would be embarrassed to make in live conversation.

As for our lord and saviour EIC, what "senior editor" takes a camera into a private meeting of a competing company and then posts pictures to his blog in real time? And then writes a "tell-all" post making it clear that he is just an annoying gnat on the ass of sports journalism ("OMG, it's Norby! Like, for real! And he's coming close to me and trying to figure out who the hell I am. I must be important!!1!")

And what competent editor lets a racist post run and, rather than admitting that it never should have been posted or publicly addressing it at all, just tries to bury it with a barrage of half-baked posts?

I know that Sharting and his legions of lawyerly friends will take a break from staring at their own navels and/or whichever lovely combinations of streets & avenues comprise their entire worldview to defend their hero with ingenious "you are a moron" rebuttals - but the fact remains that Craggs is a good writer, but a mediocre editor. Hopefully he will learn on the job, but the trend is not encouraging.

    13. Guy who,

That's an awful lot of not getting it. The post where Craggs crashed ESPN's big meeting is just about the most Deadspinny post of all time. Deadspin was, and is a puckish, mischievous and occasionally childish site that embraces poking a finger in the eye of sports jooooournalism, while also contributing excellent pieces. As much as I love what Luke O'Brien has done, an entire site of that is not what I want, and I suspect not what most people want (just like we don't want 15 consecutive Drunken Sex Poop Balls posts). Frankly, my biggest fear of the Craggs era would be that that sort of post would go away, and it would turn into some higher profile The Classical. The Classical is great, but the Craggs Crashes the Meeting post is a spiritual cousin of the Favredong Expose, which is a crowning moment of Deadspin, and of the sort of blogging/reporting/journalism that we relish.

As for the Call Center Help post, that was not a racist post. It was a poorly framed, and underdeveloped, but not by any stretch, in the real and not internet white knight sense of the word, racist.

Oh, remember that time that Will ran the "Hey, check out Holley Mangold - She's FAT!" post? Remember when AJ ran "Check Out This Passed-Out Chick Getting Screwed On The Floor Of A Bathroom?" Good times.

Was it that much worse than a usual Monday? I thought there were some fine comments today. RMJ=H and BronzeHammer, off the top of my head, made strong offerings.

    2. Even on the worst days there are some gems, but it was pretty ugly overall. Maybe it's just my sour mood. And the impending ruining of the comments section that have me down. I've looked at the Gawker comments and once the implement that system on the Deadspin, I fear I will no longer have the will to comment.

  9. Looking at the argument above, I think one thing we can all agree on is that this guy is terrible.

  11. Hey, look everybody - MBA is up! Run over there and give Shitehawk the attention he deserves. As you know, what he does is insanely difficult - the "featured comment" link can't just click itself, you know. And, he can barely keep himself going in the face of our constant negativity. So, let's give our little tinkerbell some much-needed applause before he chokes to death on his own self-importance.

    1. What are you hoping to accomplish today, Guy Who?

    2. Eh, I'm just playing around.

But I find it amusing that Deadspin is centered on the idea that the big sports journalism types all eventually become egomaniacs obsessed with their own reputation and supported by cadres of blind loyalists - but we refuse to admit that it happens here too. We cheer when DS pokes fun at ESPN, but we boo when someone dares to challenge our own "leadership," even when that leadership makes questionable decision after questionable decision and has no better qualification than stringing together attractive phrases with no real substance behind them.

As for my latest comment - anyone with an unbiased eye would acknowledge that Shitehawk can come across as a pretentious blowhard (not always, but today in particular). But, because he might bless us with his approval, we all genuflect before him.

But, to answer your question - I have no hope except to amuse myself, which, I have been told, should be the goal of any DS commenter.

    3. Just ask professional stand-up comedian: whom do you trust to critique your comedy? The answer, of course, is not their peers, i.e. fellow crafters of jokes. "Give me a dour, repetitive hall monitor with occasional Tourrette's-like outbursts, none of which are even remotely funny," they'd say.
